Mother of Baby Found in Plastic Bag Sentenced to 15 Years for Attempted Murder

In June 2019, a newborn girl, later named “Baby India,” was discovered abandoned in a plastic bag in a wooded area off Daves Creek Road in Forsyth County, Georgia. The infant was found by a local family who heard her cries and alerted authorities. Responding deputies rescued the baby just in time. She was then taken to a hospital.
After an extensive investigation spanning nearly four years, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office identified the child’s mother as 40-year-old Karima Jiwani. She was arrested in May 2023 on charges including criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault, and reckless abandonment.
On February 13, 2025, Jiwani entered a negotiated guilty plea to attempted murder and first-degree cruelty to children. She was sentenced to 30 years, with 15 years to be served in prison and the remainder on probation.
Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman expressed his sentiments on the case, stating, “I cannot find the words to describe how someone who should have done their best for a newborn child, instead did their worst and for that she will spend 15 years in prison.” He also commended the dedication of the investigative team and the efforts of District Attorney Penny Penn in bringing the case to a resolution.
“Baby India” has since been placed in a loving home, and her story has drawn significant attention to the importance of safe haven laws and resources available for parents in crisis.
