Public Invited to Shape Future of East Bank Project in Macon-Bibb
The Macon-Bibb County Office of Planning & Public Spaces is calling on residents to help envision the future of the East Bank Project, the redevelopment of the former Bibb Mill site on Coliseum Drive. Community feedback is being sought through online submissions and public forums to ensure the project meets the needs of residents while creating a gateway that connects Downtown, East Macon neighborhoods, the Centreplex, and the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park.
“We want to hear from our community about what they think of this area and what they want to see there in the future,” said Alex Morrison, Director of Planning & Public Spaces. “This is a critical junction, and we only get one chance to get it right.”
The East Bank Project has the potential to become a vibrant hub, attracting an estimated $350 million in private investment due to its prime location near Interstate 16, Downtown Macon, and the Ocmulgee National Park. Mayor Lester Miller highlighted the importance of the site, saying, “When people get off the interstate, we want them to be greeted with something that makes them want to stay longer.”
Visit Macon President Gary Wheat encouraged residents to participate, emphasizing the importance of local input. “This project can create a gateway that complements the National Park, East Macon, and Downtown,” Wheat said.
Community members are also invited to share insights about challenges and opportunities for the area. “We want to include local knowledge, especially from East Macon and Fort Hill residents, in the National Park strategic planning process,” said Matt Chalfa, Director of Strategic Planning for the Ocmulgee National Park & Preserve Initiative.
The East Bank Project is part of Macon-Bibb’s broader vision of intentional, community-focused development. “We are ensuring this project benefits locals above all while serving as the front porch of Macon-Bibb to new visitors,” Morrison added.
