DeKalb Officers Shot Responding to Domestic Dispute, Suspect Arrested
Two DeKalb County police officers were shot Wednesday afternoon, November 27, while responding to a domestic dispute at a residence on Waldrop Cove. The suspect, 20-year-old Demetrius Sutherland, was arrested after a brief chase.
Officers were dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. following an “open line” 911 call, in which arguing could be heard in the background. Upon arrival, officers encountered a mother who reported her son was acting aggressively and causing a disturbance.
Police Chief Mirtha Ramos explained during a press conference that the officers entered the apartment and approached a bedroom door, where Sutherland opened fire. Sgt. Matthews, 34, was struck in the leg or upper hip, and Ofc. Howell, 35, was hit in the foot.
Despite his injuries, Sgt. Matthews pursued the suspect, who jumped out of a window in an attempt to flee. Matthews helped apprehend Sutherland, who was taken into custody and later charged with family violence battery and two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.
Both officers were transported to Grady Hospital. Ofc. Howell was discharged Wednesday and is recovering at home. On Thursday, the department confirmed Sgt. Matthews had also been released and was recovering with his family.
Chief Ramos commended Sgt. Matthews’ actions, stating, “His bravery and dedication to his duty are a testament to the commitment our officers display daily.”
Sgt. Matthews has served with DeKalb Police for 11 years, while Ofc. Howell has been with the department for four years.
DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond expressed gratitude for the officers’ expected full recovery, saying, “We are thankful our officers will be able to spend Thanksgiving with their families.”
