GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in DeKalb County; Officer and Suspect Hospitalized
DECATUR, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is examining an officer-involved shooting that left a DeKalb County police officer injured and a suspect in critical condition Monday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:18 a.m. on June 8 in the 2900 block of North Decatur Road, according to the GBI.
Preliminary information indicates a DeKalb County Police Department officer encountered a man who appeared to be sleeping on the property of an unoccupied business. During the interaction, the man allegedly refused to identify himself and reached for a sharp-edged weapon.
Investigators said the officer attempted to detain the man after observing him reach for the weapon. The man then allegedly attacked the officer, knocking him to the ground and stabbing him in the head and arm.
According to the GBI, the officer responded by firing his weapon, striking the man.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported both individuals to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities identified the man as 30-year-old Aghil Rezaei. He remains in critical condition.
The injured officer is reported to be in stable condition.
At the request of the DeKalb County Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
Once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
