Coweta County Officials Address False Rumors About Homestead Tax Exemption Meeting

Coweta County government officials are addressing rumors circulating in the community regarding a meeting scheduled for December 9, 2024. The rumors claim that the County will hold a “closed-door meeting” to vote on repealing the homestead tax exemption, following the passage of House Bill 581, also known as Amendment #5, on the November 5, 2024, statewide ballot.

Officials have confirmed that these rumors are completely false. The meeting will not involve any votes or decisions related to repealing the homestead tax exemption. Under Georgia law, such actions would require public advertisement and the holding of three public hearings in compliance with the Georgia Open Meetings Act.

There will be no quorum of elected officials present at the meeting, meaning no official voting can take place. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the implementation of the floating homestead exemption, and no votes will occur.

The County thanked residents who reached out to clarify the misinformation and urged the public to rely on official communications for accurate information.
