Carroll County Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Aggravated Child Molestation and Rape
John Earl Mack

On August 8, 2024, a Carroll County jury found John Earl Mack, 43, guilty of two counts of Aggravated Child Molestation, Rape, and Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes. Superior Court Judge Dustin Hightower sentenced Mack to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 30 years.

Mack, who had a prior conviction for Rape in the Second Degree in 2002 in New York, was prosecuted by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Lara Todd and DA Investigator Becky Byrd. Detective Chris Bertera of the Villa Rica Police Department led the investigation.

The investigation revealed that on September 18, 2022, a fifteen-year-old female reported to the Villa Rica Police Department that Mack, who had previously been involved with the victim’s mother, sexually assaulted her multiple times between May 1 and May 12, 2022. The abuse was initially discovered when the victim’s mother overheard Mack making sexual comments and requesting oral sex from the victim.

Although the victim initially denied any inappropriate behavior, she later confirmed the abuse after further questioning. She reported that Mack had committed the crimes at an abandoned home in Villa Rica and at a residence in Fulton County, and that he had also given her drugs at the Villa Rica location.

The case was supported by the Carroll County Advocacy Center (CCAC), where the victim was forensically interviewed. The efforts of Detective Bertera, the CCAC, and the jury trial were crucial in securing Mack’s conviction and life sentence. The District Attorney’s Office emphasized their commitment to seeking significant prison sentences for offenders who target children.
