Tiny Cottages in Macon Provide Stable Housing for Those in Need
Timothy Hart, who has faced challenges stemming from mental health and substance use issues, is preparing to move into the Tiny Cottages of Macon, a new initiative aimed at providing stable housing for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Tiny Cottages, a village of ten tiny homes located on Norris Street in East Macon, were constructed and will be managed by River Edge Behavioral Health.
The project was made possible through over $1.7 million in HOME Investment Partnership grant funds from Macon-Bibb County’s Economic & Community Development Department. These homes are designed for individuals with mental health or substance use disorders, offering a supportive environment where residents can access wraparound services to aid in their recovery.
Individuals interested in the tiny homes and who believe they qualify can contact the Macon-Bibb Economic Opportunity Council (EOC) at 478-738-3240 for an assessment.
Cass Hatcher, Chief Executive Officer of River Edge Behavioral Health, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting its potential to provide affordable housing and supportive services for individuals with disabilities. This construction is part of Macon-Bibb County’s broader strategy to combat homelessness, enhance mental health support, and expand affordable housing options. Since 2021, the county has invested millions in initiatives including the Brookdale Resource Center and free mental health services at community events.
