GBI Investigates In-Custody Death of Brunswick Man

At the request of the Glynn County Schools Police Department, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating the in-custody death of Isaias Gomez Pena, 38, of Brunswick, GA.

Preliminary information indicates that on Monday, May 21, 2024, a Glynn County School Resource Officer (SRO) was alerted to a distressed person on South Port Parkway. The SRO responded and found Pena at the scene. During an interaction between the SRO and Pena, additional law enforcement officers were called to assist.

Officers noticed Pena was experiencing a medical emergency and called EMS. EMTs treated Pena at the scene before transporting him to Southeast Medical Hospital, where he later died. A GBI Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
