Burglary Suspects Arrested and Stolen Property Recovered in Athens

On July 24th, around 10:00 AM, Senior Police Officer Xiong from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a burglary call in the 300 block of Barnett Shoals Rd in Athens. After reviewing surveillance footage, SPO Xiong identified the two suspects, known to frequent convenience stores on Lexington Rd.

Approximately two hours later, SPO Xiong observed the suspects at a business on Lexington Rd. The suspects were contacted and taken into custody. All stolen property from the burglary was recovered.

The suspects, 20-year-old Zander Lee Smalley of Athens and 32-year-old Justin Symes of Athens, were charged with burglary and taken to Clarke County Jail. Bond was set at $2,500.

“Part of our patrol unit’s effectiveness is its knowledge of the people and places in its patrol area. After reviewing the video from the incident, Senior Police Officer Xiong recognized the suspects and knew where they might be located. This led to a quick arrest and recovery of stolen property! Good work, SPO Xiong and Days East Patrol!”, said the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in a statement.
