Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Raping and Kidnapping Atlanta Woman in 2022

40-year-old Curtis Patrick has been convicted by a Fulton County jury for rape, kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated sodomy, robbery by force, sexual battery, and battery. Patrick was then sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 21 years.

“This was a chilling crime involving a violent sexual assault, where the victim bravely fought back, aiding in securing a conviction,” District Attorney Fani T. Willis said. “I am relieved that the defendant will spend the rest of his life behind bars, unable to harm anyone else.”

The case stemmed from an October, 2022 incident. At the time, Atlanta Police Officers were dispatched to a woman found naked and knocking on door for help.

The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said that the victim told police that she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a man that also stole her car. The victim had been at an event and when she was leaving, an unknown man entered her vehicle. The woman said he kept his hand in his jacket as if he had a weapon. The suspect was later identified as Patrick. The victim was forced to drive away and suddenly instructed to stop the car. At that time, Patrick took her car keys and phone. He proceeded to attack her when she tried to resist.

The victim resisted, prompting the attacker to strike her on the lip and threaten to kill her and dispose of her body. He then took control of the vehicle and drove to a recycling center located at 215 Tudor Street, where he forced her to perform oral sex and raped her after falsely claiming to have two pistols in his jacket.

The District Attorney’s office reported that the victim fought back during the assault, attempting to defend herself with a pole by swinging it at the attacker.

Patrick then ordered her out of the vehicle. As she held onto the door handle, he sped off, dragging her along until she was thrown off during a sharp turn. The victim briefly lost consciousness before regaining it and, wearing only a pair of sandals, began banging on doors until someone called the police.

The DA’s office stated that the woman sustained abrasions and lacerations from her scalp to her toes and was admitted to the burn unit with friction burns covering 9% of her body. She spent seven days in the Grady ICU.

Patrick’s sister recognized her brother from the surveillance footage broadcasted on news channels and called police. He was DNA tested and matched to the crime.
