Newton County Meth Dealer Sentenced to 30 Years After Pleading Guilty to Multiple Drug Trafficking Charges
COVINGTON, Ga. — A repeat drug offender has been sentenced to 30 years after pleading guilty to multiple methamphetamine trafficking and drug distribution charges stemming from two separate investigations in Newton County.
Just before jury selection began on July 7, 2026, 52-year-old Walter Brian Johnson pleaded guilty to numerous felony drug offenses after the court granted the State’s request to combine two separate criminal cases for trial.
Johnson pleaded guilty to:
- Three counts of Trafficking Methamphetamine
- One count of Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute
- One count of Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute
- One count of Possession of Marijuana More Than One Ounce
- One count of Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance
The investigation began on June 22, 2024, when Newton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence on Mote Road after receiving a report of a man with a gunshot wound.
Deputies met with Johnson’s mother, who said he arrived at her home claiming he had been shot. Johnson told investigators he had been exercising when two people dressed in black approached and shot him without provocation.
Investigators, however, found no blood or shell casings where Johnson claimed the shooting occurred.
As the investigation continued, deputies determined Johnson lived at a nearby residence on Highway 162. There, investigators found blood, shell casings, and a firearm outside the home.
A search of the residence uncovered more than one kilogram of methamphetamine, additional illegal narcotics, drug distribution materials, and documents linking Johnson to the residence.
The investigation continued several months later.
On Sept. 27, 2024, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Johnson at a Newton County gas station. Investigators found him in possession of multiple ounces of methamphetamine and other narcotics.
Deputies then obtained another search warrant for Johnson’s Highway 162 residence, where they recovered more than an ounce of methamphetamine, a large quantity of cocaine, and more than an ounce of marijuana.
Johnson was sentenced to 30 years, with the first 25 years to be served in prison. He was also ordered to pay more than $1.5 million in fines and surcharges and must comply with numerous special conditions, including a Fourth Amendment waiver.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney PJ Hemmann Jr. with assistance from Investigator Colin Cunningham, Trial Assistant Danielle Miller, and Legal Assistant Anna Sugg. The investigation was conducted by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
“This case demonstrates the dangers of selling narcotics,” District Attorney Randy McGinley said. “Johnson, who has a previous conviction for multiple counts of sale of methamphetamine, was distributing dangerous drugs in our community. That not only led to a lengthy prison sentence, but it also put him in danger of losing his life. Thankfully no one else was harmed by the gun violence that Johnson’s drug peddling brought to our community.”
