14-Year-Old Charged as Adult After Jones County Shooting Incident

GRAY, Ga. — A 14-year-old boy is being prosecuted as an adult after authorities say he stole two firearms from his family’s safe and fired shots at a Jones County residence.

According to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on Friday, June 26, to a report of shots fired at a home in Jones County.

Following an investigation, deputies took the juvenile into custody.

Investigators determined the teen had stolen two firearms from a safe inside his home before the shooting.

The juvenile has been charged with multiple counts of Aggravated Assault and two counts of Theft by Taking.

Because of the seriousness of the alleged offenses, prosecutors will seek to try him as an adult. He remains in the custody of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice pending further court proceedings.

According to the sheriff’s office, this was the fourth law enforcement incident involving the juvenile in 2026.

In May, deputies responded to two separate incidents involving the teen that resulted in charges including Simple Battery, Terroristic Threats involving family members, and Electronically Furnishing Obscene Materials to a Minor.

Authorities also responded to the juvenile’s home on June 25, one day before the shooting, after he allegedly became involved in a dispute with family members and caused extensive damage by breaking multiple windows.

Although the juvenile was referred to the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice following that incident, the agency did not authorize secure detention under the state’s juvenile detention assessment guidelines.

The sheriff’s office said it is frequently asked why repeat juvenile offenders are not detained after prior incidents and noted that detention decisions are governed by state guidelines and assessment tools rather than solely by deputies or the sheriff’s office.

Investigators said no one was injured during the June 26 shooting.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to protecting the community while holding offenders accountable.
