GBI Investigating Deadly Cobb County Standoff That Left Two Dead
COBB COUNTY, Ga. — State investigators are reviewing an officer-involved shooting that left a 29-year-old man dead following a standoff at a Marietta home, authorities said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation at the request of the Cobb County Police Department.
Police said officers were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. May 4 to a home in the 3100 block of Vandiver Drive for a welfare check after a caller reported being unable to reach their elderly mother and warned that a resident, identified as William Peak, was experiencing a mental health crisis.
When officers arrived, Peak reportedly shouted at them to leave. Officers then heard a gunshot from inside the home.
A SWAT team responded and deployed a drone, which showed an elderly woman inside who appeared unresponsive. Officers later entered and found the woman deceased. She was identified as 71-year-old Lorrie Peak.
Authorities said Peak was seen moving through the home and fired additional shots, striking two law enforcement vehicles. SWAT withdrew and attempted to negotiate, deploying gas into the residence when Peak refused to surrender.
Investigators said Peak later appeared at a front window armed with a gun. An officer fired, striking him. A bomb robot equipped with a camera was then used to monitor the scene, where officers observed Peak still armed. Authorities said he pointed the weapon both outward and at himself before ultimately shooting himself.
William Peak was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
Both William Peak and Lorrie Peak will be transported to the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies.
The investigation remains ongoing.
