STEPHENS COUNTY, Ga. — A tense overnight standoff ended peacefully Friday morning after an armed suspect accused of threatening deputies surrendered following hours of negotiations, according to the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 9 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2026, to a domestic disturbance on Sweetgum Road where shots had allegedly been fired at a 911 caller.

When deputies arrived, authorities said 41-year-old Christopher Dean of Toccoa threatened to shoot responding officers if they did not leave the property.

Two women at the scene were safely removed while Dean barricaded himself inside the residence with a firearm, officials said.

The Georgia State Patrol, the sheriff’s office Special Response Team, and the Georgia State Patrol Crisis Intervention Team were called in to assist. Deputies also obtained an arrest warrant for Dean and a search warrant for the home.

At approximately 12:43 a.m., a negotiator made contact with Dean by phone. Authorities said Dean requested food and something to drink, which was provided after he agreed to surrender his weapons.

Dean reportedly turned over two handguns before surrendering to officers around 2:28 a.m. He was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Stephens County Jail.

Dean is currently charged with aggravated assault, and additional charges may be pending.

“Success in a situation like this isn’t measured by force, but by the lives preserved through patience,” Sheriff Rusty Fulbright said. “Our goal is always a peaceful resolution by bringing a volatile situation to a calm end. Patience isn’t a delay; it’s our most powerful tool for protecting our community.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
