Suspect Shot by Georgia State Trooper During Foot Pursuit in Newton County
NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A 20-year-old man was shot by a Georgia State Patrol trooper during a foot pursuit Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 3:27 p.m. on March 27, 2026, when troopers were assisting the GBI Metro Gang Task Force with a traffic stop involving a vehicle driven by Jamari Thurman of Covington.
According to officials, troopers attempted to stop Thurman on Georgia 162 near Brown Bridge Road after observing traffic violations. Thurman initially slowed but then accelerated away, turning onto Old Oak Court.
At the end of a cul-de-sac, Thurman stopped the vehicle and fled on foot while holding a handgun, authorities said.
One trooper pursued Thurman on foot while another remained with the vehicle and passenger. During the pursuit, the trooper discharged his firearm, striking Thurman.
The trooper provided medical aid until emergency responders arrived. Thurman was transported by air to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been notified and is conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, in accordance with Department of Public Safety policy.
