Man Sentenced to 25 Years After 2022 Shooting Inside Clayton County Home

JONESBORO, Georgia – A Clayton County jury has convicted a man in connection with a deadly 2022 shooting, resulting in a lengthy prison sentence.

District Attorney Tasha M. Mosley announced that Tyrone Devale Taylor was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

The charges stem from a November 19, 2022 incident when Clayton County Police responded to a residence and found the victim, Javon Russell, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Officers located Taylor outside the residence near a Smith & Wesson revolver and spent shell casings.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing the victim was inside a bedroom when Taylor entered the home, pushed past a bystander, and fired multiple shots. Investigators found damage throughout the room, including bullet defects in the walls, bedding, and pillows.

Taylor claimed he acted in self-defense and in defense of others, alleging the victim had threatened him with a knife. However, prosecutors argued that claim was not credible and contradicted earlier accounts, which ultimately influenced the jury’s decision.

The trial began on March 14 and concluded on March 20, 2026. Senior Judge Linda Cowen sentenced Taylor to 20 years in prison, followed by an additional consecutive five years.

District Attorney Mosley addressed the impact of the case, saying, “On November 19, 2022, lives were changed forever. While no verdict can erase the pain, we hope this conviction brings the family the relief and closure they deserve. Lastly, this conviction stands as a testament to our unwavering pursuit of justice.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Demarius Newsome and Arit Essien, with support from investigators and victim advocates.
