Richmond County Targets Gangs and Guns in Operation; 23 lbs of Marijuana and Firearms Seized
AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says it is intensifying efforts to combat violent crime in Augusta through coordinated action with local, state, and federal partners.
Sheriff’s officials emphasized that the rise in youth violence is not random, but often tied to gang activity, illegal drugs, and firearms. They say those involved will face aggressive prosecution through partnerships with the District Attorney’s Office, the Georgia Attorney General’s Office, and federal prosecutors when applicable.
“Seeing young people killing young people has happened far too often in our area,” the Sheriff’s Office stated, adding that accountability will follow those who choose to engage in gang activity and drug trafficking. Officials noted that gang convictions in Georgia can carry sentences ranging from five to 20 years, while certain federal gun charges carry a mandatory minimum of 10 years, with at least 85% required to be served.
That commitment was recently demonstrated during a joint gang enforcement operation led by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit. Assisting agencies included the Georgia State Patrol, the RCSO Special Operations Division, and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
As a result of the operation, two alleged members of a hybrid criminal street gang, ages 17 and 21, were arrested. Investigators seized approximately 23 pounds of marijuana, multiple firearms, and cash. Authorities say removing those weapons from the streets may have prevented future violence.
The Sheriff’s Office is also calling on families and community members to step in early when they see destructive behavior, stressing that programs and resources are available for those willing to change course.
Officials say the goal remains clear: making Augusta one of the safest cities in the country through enforcement, prevention, and community partnership.
