Jason Wallace Lary Sr.

DECATUR, Ga. – The former mayor of the City of Stonecrest, Jason Wallace Lary Sr., 63, has been indicted on state charges related to his attempt to register to vote and run for city council while still under federal supervision for a felony conviction.

On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, a DeKalb County Grand Jury indicted Lary on the following charges:

  • False Registration; Unlawful Disclosure of Voter Registration Information
  • False Swearing (two counts)
  • Making False Statements in Connection with Filing Notice of Candidacy or Qualifying as a Candidate

Background and Timeline

Lary’s state charges follow a prior federal conviction in 2022 where he pleaded guilty to wire fraud, federal program theft, and conspiracy related to the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in COVID-19 relief funds while serving as mayor of Stonecrest. He was sentenced in July 2022 to four years and nine months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

According to the investigation:

  • February 2025: Lary was released from federal custody and began his probation.
  • August 14, 2025: Lary registered to vote.
  • August 18, 2025: Lary filed paperwork to qualify to run for the Stonecrest City Council District 5 seat.
  • False Affidavits: As part of both the voter registration and candidate qualification paperwork, Lary signed documents affirming that he was not a convicted felon.

Following formal challenges by two citizens, the DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections unanimously voted to disqualify Lary as a candidate and remove him from the voter rolls on September 10, 2025. This decision prompted the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office to open the current investigation.

The DA’s Office has secured a Grand Jury warrant for Lary’s arrest. Lary has notified the DA’s Office that he plans to turn himself into the DeKalb County Jail on Thursday, October 30, 2025, and has been granted a $5,000 bond. He will be scheduled for an arraignment on the charges.
