Augusta Inmate Found Deceased at Charles B. Webster Detention Center

AUGUSTA, GA – On the morning of Wednesday, September 17, 2025, detention staff at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center discovered a 27-year-old male inmate unresponsive in his cell. The inmate, who was housed alone as a precautionary measure, was regularly checked on by staff.

Medical personnel were immediately summoned and provided lifesaving care. Central EMS transported the inmate to Wellstar MCG, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been notified and will lead the investigation into the incident.

Sheriff Eugene Brantley expressed his condolences, stating, “The safety and well-being of every individual in our custody is a top priority. Any loss of life is tragic. Our detention staff responded immediately and did everything possible to render aid until emergency personnel arrived. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time.”

Further details will not be released until next of kin have been notified. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has deferred additional updates to the GBI as the investigation continues.
