Man Stops Two Carjackings in Marietta, Holds Suspect at Gunpoint

On Monday night, June 2, 2025, Marietta Police responded to an attempted carjacking just before 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of Delk Road and Franklin Gateway. Upon arrival, officers found 66-year-old Gary Edwards holding 32-year-old Rico Devontae Riley of Smyrna at gunpoint.

Surveillance video and witness statements showed Riley pacing near an unattended Chevrolet Aveo parked at the gas station at 1200 Franklin Gateway. When the female owner exited the store and attempted to enter her car, Riley allegedly grabbed her and attempted to take her keys. The struggle lasted approximately one minute before Edwards intervened, running across the street to help.

After being confronted by Edwards, Riley fled into the roadway and allegedly tried to carjack a second vehicle—a Toyota RAV4 occupied by two adults and a two-year-old child—while it was stopped at a red light. Edwards again intervened and held Riley at gunpoint until officers arrived.

Rico Riley was taken into custody and booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on warrant 25-W-4620. He faces charges of Attempted Armed Robbery (Felony), Attempted Robbery by Snatching (Felony), Cruelty to Children in the 3rd Degree (Misdemeanor), and VGCSA Possession of Cocaine (Felony).
