Toccoa Man Found Hiding in Ventilation System, Arrested on Multiple Warrants

A Toccoa man wanted on felony warrants out of three counties was apprehended by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) on Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators received anonymous tips that Calvin McCoy, 30, was hiding in Stephens County after leaving a rehabilitation center in Hall County. McCoy had outstanding warrants for felony probation violation in Dawson, Hall, and Stephens counties, stemming from charges including Burglary in the 1st Degree, Criminal Damage to Property in the 2nd Degree, and Felony Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers.
McCoy’s extensive criminal history includes prior convictions for Terroristic Threats and Criminal Damage in Dawson County, as well as Burglary in the 1st Degree, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Felony Escape in Stephens County. He also has a history of fleeing and obstructing law enforcement.
Considering McCoy a potential threat to public safety due to his record, the CSU initiated an immediate investigation and established surveillance on a residence where he was believed to be hiding. Hall County Sheriff’s Office investigators also received independent tips confirming McCoy’s presence in Stephens County.
On Tuesday, April 15, SCSO investigators confirmed McCoy’s location at a residence off Oak Valley Road and obtained a search warrant. At approximately 3:30 p.m., the CSU executed the warrant and located McCoy hiding inside the ventilation system of the house.
McCoy was arrested on three counts of warrant service for Felony Probation Violation, as well as new charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers. He was transported to the Stephens County Jail without incident.
Also arrested at the residence was Ansley Smith, 23, of Toccoa. Investigators believe Smith assisted McCoy in concealing himself. She was charged with Hindering/Apprehending a Criminal and also transported to the Stephens County Jail.
The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the Georgia State Patrol, Department of Community Supervision, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, and the ARDEO Task Force for their assistance in this investigation.
