Three Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Employees Resign After Flock Safety Audit

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. – Three employees with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office have resigned after an internal audit flagged their use of the Flock Safety license plate reader system, prompting the agency to request an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the agency routinely uses auditing tools to monitor employees’ access to and use of multiple law enforcement technology systems, including the Flock Safety platform.

During a self-initiated internal audit, several employee accounts were flagged for administrative review based on their use of the system.

As part of the review process, three employees met with their respective department heads to discuss their use of Flock Safety. Before an internal investigation could begin or the audit process could be completed, all three employees resigned from the Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities did not identify the former employees or specify what activity triggered the audit flags. The Sheriff’s Office also did not announce whether any criminal misconduct has been alleged.

In a statement, the agency emphasized that employees are entrusted with access to sensitive law enforcement technology and are expected to use those systems lawfully, ethically and in accordance with departmental policy.

“The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and its employees are entrusted with access to sensitive law enforcement technology and information,” the agency said. “We expect every employee with access to these systems to use them in a manner that is lawful, ethical and in accordance with agency policy.”

The Sheriff’s Office said it is reinforcing its oversight measures by providing additional training to all authorized users of the Flock Safety system. The training will focus on agency policies, proper system use and employee accountability.

Officials said they will continue using auditing tools and established review procedures to help ensure law enforcement technology is accessed only for legitimate investigative purposes.

To promote transparency and maintain public trust, the Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct an independent review of the former employees’ conduct.

The investigation remains ongoing.
