Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation Following Armed Robbery in Rome, Georgia

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has commenced an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Rome, Georgia, at the request of the Rome Police Department. The incident resulted in the death of Kelvin Gerard Jackson, 34, of Augusta, GA, with no injuries reported among the officers involved.

Preliminary details suggest that on Friday, February 23, 2024, around 11:10 a.m., officers from the Rome Police Department responded to an ongoing armed robbery at the Hi-Tech convenience store located in the 400 block of South Broad Street, Rome, Georgia. Surveillance footage reveals that Jackson entered the store and coerced the clerk at gunpoint to fill a bag with money. Upon the arrival of a Rome Police Department officer, Jackson fled the scene through the main entrance and onto McGhee Street, with the officer in pursuit.

During the ensuing encounter, the officer discharged their weapon, resulting in Jackson sustaining fatal injuries. A firearm was discovered adjacent to Jackson following the incident.

Jackson’s body is scheduled for examination at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur, GA, for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the matter. Upon its conclusion, the case file will be forwarded to the Floyd County District Attorney’s Office for review.
