Former Columbus Mayor and Police Chief Jim Wetherington Passes Away

The Columbus Police Department is mourning the loss of former Mayor and Police Chief Jim Wetherington, who passed away earlier today. Chief Wetherington, a dedicated public servant, began his career with the Columbus Police Department in 1959. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and served as Chief of Police from 1981 until his retirement in 1995.

In addition to his distinguished service with the Columbus Police Department, Chief Wetherington also contributed to the state of Georgia. He served on the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, was the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Corrections, and held the position of the 67th Mayor of Columbus.

Chief Wetherington’s leadership and commitment to his community have left an indelible mark on both the police department and the city of Columbus. “Chief Wetherington was a respected leader who left a lasting impact on this department and our city,” said current Columbus Police Chief Stoney Mathis. “I had the privilege of meeting him and learning from his leadership. His example continues to influence how I serve in this role today.”
