Shooting in Columbus Ruled Justified; Suspect Arrested for Assault and Battery
Cory Bell

On January 14, 2025, at 4:31 p.m., Columbus Police responded to the 2000 block of Wynnton Road following a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers found 48-year-old Cory Bell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Bell was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Officers determined that the shooting occurred inside an apartment. In the apartment, they found a female and another male, along with evidence including two shell casings and a shattered glass end table. The Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and concluded that the male involved in the shooting acted in self-defense and in defense of the female.

The investigation revealed that Bell had assaulted the female, striking her and knocking her through the glass table, before directing his aggression toward the male, who is physically handicapped. As a result, the shooting was ruled justified.

Warrants were issued for Bell on charges of Exploitation and Intimidation of Disabled Adults/Elderly Persons, Battery (x2), and Criminal Trespass. Bell was arrested on January 24, 2025, and transported to the Muscogee County Jail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Recorder’s Court on January 29, 2025, at 8 a.m.
