Atlanta Police Investigator Dies in Off-Duty Shooting Incident
Aubree Horton

The Atlanta Police Department has confirmed the passing of 32-year-old Investigator Aubree Horton, who died in an off-duty incident in Douglas County, Georgia. Investigator Horton joined the Atlanta Police Department in November 2015 and was most recently assigned to the APD’s Fugitive Unit.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

On October 4, 2024, at approximately 5 a.m., Douglas County deputies were dispatched to 8025 Orkney Way in Winston, Georgia, in response to reports of a person shot.

Preliminary information indicates that a male, who appeared on video to be experiencing a mental health crisis or under the influence of narcotics, attempted to break into the front door of a residence on Orkney Way. The individual was later identified as Horton, who resided nearby at 8071 Rannoch Moor Drive, in the same neighborhood. After gaining entry into the home, Horton was confronted by the homeowner, who, acting in self-defense, shot him inside the residence. The gunshot was fatal, and Horton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigator Horton had been with the Atlanta Police Department for nearly 10 years and was recently awarded the “Investigator of the Year” at the Atlanta Police Foundation’s annual Crime is Toast ceremony.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed the reasons behind Horton’s alleged attempt to break into the home.

The investigation remains active, with authorities gathering evidence to clarify the events leading up to the incident.
