Fort Valley Police Chief David Wilson Resigns, Seeks Return as Part-Time Captain
FORT VALLEY, Ga. — Fort Valley Police Chief David Wilson has submitted his resignation, saying city leaders want to move the department in a different direction just five months after he was appointed to lead the agency.
In a resignation letter addressed to City Manager LeMario Brown, Wilson announced his resignation as chief effective July 18, 2026.
Wilson wrote that his decision came after learning that Mayor Shakeena B. Reeves and the Fort Valley City Council wanted to take the police department “in a different direction.”
“I appreciate the clarity conveyed through the City Manager that this decision is not the result of any wrongdoing on my part,” Wilson wrote. “I am grateful that my efforts in leading, strengthening, and transitioning the department have been recognized and appreciated.”
Wilson highlighted several accomplishments during his tenure, including strengthening departmental operations, enhancing public safety initiatives, and implementing the Flock Safety camera system, which he said has improved the department’s ability to investigate crimes and respond to incidents.
“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Fort Valley,” Wilson wrote. “I take pride in knowing that the department is in a stronger position today and that our efforts have helped improve the safety and well-being of our citizens.”
Although disappointed that his leadership would not continue, Wilson said he respects the city’s decision and believes stepping aside is in the best interest of everyone involved.
In the letter, Wilson also requested to return to the Fort Valley Police Department in a part-time capacity at his previous rank of captain so he can continue serving the community while pursuing other career opportunities.
Wilson’s resignation comes after months of leadership changes within the department.
On Jan. 30, 2026, the Fort Valley City Council voted to terminate then-Police Chief DJ Flores and Assistant Police Chief Michael Bostic over allegations involving ethical violations, unauthorized spending, and internal conduct failures.
Captain Alger Raines was initially appointed acting chief following those terminations. However, on Feb. 5, the city instead named Wilson as interim chief to lead the department through the transition.
Wilson’s resignation leaves the department once again searching for new leadership, marking another chapter in a year of significant turnover within the Fort Valley Police Department.
