Macon-Bibb Conducting Countywide Sidewalk Assessment to Improve Accessibility and Infrastructure
MACON, Ga. — Macon-Bibb County is conducting a comprehensive assessment of sidewalks and accessibility ramps throughout the county as part of its ongoing Paving the Way infrastructure initiative.
County officials announced that in April they contracted with Citylogix to evaluate approximately 350 miles of sidewalks and more than 7,500 accessibility ramps across Macon-Bibb.
“This work helps us better understand what we have and where we need to go,” Mayor Lester Miller said. “It’s about making our community safer and more accessible for everyone.”
The accessibility ramp assessment began in May, and officials expect both the ramp and sidewalk evaluations to be completed by the end of July.
According to the county, Citylogix is using advanced mapping technology and high-resolution imaging equipment to create a detailed inventory of sidewalk conditions throughout Macon-Bibb.
The company utilizes an e-scooter-based data collection system equipped with a mobile device, GPS technology and specialized cameras. The system captures video and identifies issues including cracks, surface distortions, uneven pavement, general uplifts and damage caused by tree roots.
Collected data is analyzed and each sidewalk segment is assigned a condition score ranging from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the best condition and 0 representing the poorest condition.
County officials said the assessment will provide a clearer understanding of existing sidewalk infrastructure and help guide future maintenance, repair and investment decisions.
The sidewalk project follows a similar effort completed by Citylogix to evaluate Macon-Bibb’s paved road network. That analysis reviewed approximately 1,100 city-owned streets and assigned condition ratings to individual road segments.
Roadways selected for repaving under the Paving the Way program were prioritized based on several factors, including roads rated 30 or below, arterial and collector roads rated below 40, connecting roadways rated between 30 and 55, and heavily traveled industrial corridors.
Since the paving initiative began in the summer of 2025, Macon-Bibb County reports that 890 road segments across 356 streets have been resurfaced, totaling more than 120 miles of roadway improvements.
Officials say the new sidewalk inventory will help ensure future infrastructure improvements address both safety and accessibility needs throughout the community.
