Inmate Charged With Murder Following Fatal Assault at Richmond County Detention Center

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A Richmond County inmate has been charged with murder after another inmate died from injuries sustained during an assault inside the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, authorities said.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on June 7 during routine shift-change inmate headcounts.

A deputy jailer observed an assault in progress inside a shared cell and immediately intervened, stopping the attack and calling for additional detention staff and medical personnel.

Detention staff and emergency responders provided medical aid to the injured inmate before he was transported to Wellstar MCG Health for further treatment.

The inmate later died from his injuries at the hospital.

Following an investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, 37-year-old inmate Jerry Neal Kimble was charged with murder in connection with the assault.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
