GBI Investigating Deadly Rhine Standoff After Suspect Opened Fire on Deputies

RHINE, Georgia – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting and standoff in Rhine after a suspect allegedly opened fire on deputies responding to a threats complaint.

According to the GBI, the incident occurred Sunday, May 24, at approximately 2:50 p.m. on Studstill Road in Rhine.

Investigators said deputies with the Telfair County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence after receiving reports that 34-year-old Corey Jake Conley was threatening another person.

Authorities said when deputies arrived at the home, Conley allegedly began shooting at them from inside the residence.

Both deputies were able to retreat safely without injuries, according to investigators.

Law enforcement established a perimeter around the property until the Georgia State Patrol SWAT team arrived to assist.

Officials said SWAT negotiators attempted to persuade Conley to surrender peacefully, but he refused.

Investigators said SWAT team members later entered the home and found Conley suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Conley was transported to an ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said his body was taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
