Deputies Escape Ambush-Style Attack During Standoff in Telfair County

TELFAIR COUNTY, Georgia – Two deputies narrowly escaped injury after coming under gunfire while responding to a threats complaint Sunday afternoon in Telfair County, according to the Telfair County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Davidson said deputies were initially dispatched May 24 to investigate reports that a suspect had made threats toward another person.

After speaking with the complainant, deputies attempted to contact the alleged offender at a residence on Studstill Road off Temperance Road.

Authorities said as deputies arrived on the property, they were immediately met with gunfire in what Sheriff Sim Davidson described as an “ambush-styled attack.”

Both deputies were able to retreat safely from the area and request emergency assistance.

Law enforcement officers from multiple surrounding agencies quickly responded and established a perimeter around the property in an effort to contain the suspect.

The Georgia State Patrol SWAT and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were called to assist and eventually assumed control of the incident.

Officials said negotiators attempted to contact the suspect by phone and convince him to surrender peacefully, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

Authorities later entered the residence and found the suspect suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect died at the scene.

Sheriff Davidson said no deputies or other first responders were injured during the standoff.

The sheriff thanked responding agencies, dispatchers, EMS personnel, firefighters, county officials, and members of Rockwell Baptist Church, who allowed law enforcement to establish an incident command post at the church during the operation.

Davidson also noted the incident highlighted serious communication issues in the rural area, where poor radio and cellular reception made coordination between responders difficult throughout the rapidly evolving situation.

The sheriff emphasized there is “no such thing as a routine call,” noting deputies regularly respond to similar complaints without violence, but situations can quickly become dangerous.

Authorities said the investigation remains active and no additional details will be released at this time.
