GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting During Mental Health Call in Gwinnett County

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon in Gwinnett County, leaving a 19-year-old man critically injured.

According to authorities, the incident happened around 1:20 p.m. on December 18, 2025, in the 6000 block of Lockridge Drive NW in Doraville. Gwinnett County Police Department officers were called to the residence to assist mental health clinicians with a reported mental health crisis involving Christopher Richard Stalker, also known as Chris Richard.

Before officers arrived, clinicians with a mobile mental health response team determined that Richard needed to be transported immediately to a mental health facility for evaluation. When Richard refused to comply, clinicians requested assistance from GCPD.

Once on scene, officers attempted to speak with Richard. During the encounter, Richard reportedly produced a knife and began walking toward one of the officers. Police say the officer issued multiple verbal commands for Richard to drop the knife, but he did not comply and continued advancing. The officer then fired, striking Richard multiple times.

Richard was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. One officer involved in the incident sustained minor injuries.

At the request of the Gwinnett County Police Department, the GBI has taken over the investigation to ensure an independent review. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be submitted to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.

No additional details have been released at this time, as the investigation remains ongoing.
