Woman Struck by Train While Walking Railroad Trestle Over St. Marys River; Deputy Collapses from Heat Exhaustion

Authorities are investigating a serious incident involving a pedestrian struck by a train on a railroad trestle spanning the St. Marys River between Charlton County, Georgia, and Nassau County, Florida.
According to Charlton County Sheriff Robert Phillips, 32-year-old Chelsea Crews of Folkston was reportedly walking southbound across the trestle from the Charlton side when a train approached. Crews was struck by the train and thrown against the trestle structure, suffering serious injuries.
Emergency crews from Charlton EMS and Sgt. Wyatt Garvin responded to the scene. Due to difficult terrain, they transported Crews by truck to a waiting ambulance. She was then taken to Shands Jacksonville for treatment. Her current condition has not been released.
CSX Railroad Police are leading the investigation. CSX Investigator Bryan Robbins is assigned to the case.
Sheriff Phillips reminded the public that railroad tracks and trestles are private property, and trespassing is both illegal and dangerous.
In a separate incident, a Charlton County deputy collapsed on duty along Highway 121 South due to apparent heat-related exhaustion. The deputy lost consciousness and fell beside his patrol car but is now recovering after receiving medical attention. Sheriff Phillips credited Kayley and Fox Philo of Folkston for alerting authorities and staying with the deputy until help arrived.
