Bibb’s Backbone Campaign Spotlights Macon-Bibb’s Economic & Community Development Team

As part of National County Government Month, Macon-Bibb County has launched a new campaign called “Bibb’s Backbone” to recognize the dedicated members of Team Macon-Bibb who work diligently to serve the community, often in roles that go unnoticed.

The campaign’s initial focus is on the Economic and Community Development Department (ECD), a vital division that works to strengthen Macon-Bibb from the ground up by assisting families with housing and improving neighborhood infrastructure.

“This is why I wanted to start this campaign,” said Emily Hopkins, Digital Content Specialist and interviewer for Bibb’s Backbone. “There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes that people don’t know about. The Economic and Community Development team is doing powerful, meaningful work, and it deserves to be seen and celebrated.”

The ECD Department comprises dedicated professionals, including Director Wanzina Jackson, Assistant Director Charlotte Woody, and Redevelopment Manager Ken Braden, who manage federal funds and connect residents with essential resources. They also support local organizations in implementing programs that directly enhance the community’s quality of life.

The department manages several critical programs funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), including:

  • Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG): Supports agencies providing prevention services and rapid rehousing support to individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Roof Your House Program: Offers up to $7,500 for eligible homeowners to undertake vital roof repairs, thereby improving safety and preserving homeownership.

These funds are allocated based on population and poverty levels and are exclusively used within Macon-Bibb County to ensure a direct and measurable local impact.

“Being able to assist individuals who otherwise may not have that assistance… it’s a nice feeling, it’s a good feeling, and it actually makes a difference in our community,” said Charlotte Woody, Assistant Director.

Macon-Bibb County is expressing its pride in the Economic and Community Development Department for its unwavering commitment to public service and community progress, recognizing them as a crucial part of “Bibb’s Backbone.”

The “Bibb’s Backbone” campaign will continue throughout April, spotlighting more of the hardworking individuals who form the foundation of the local government. Residents are encouraged to follow along on social media and the county website to learn more about the people who keep Macon-Bibb County moving forward.
