Fulton County Breaks Ground on New Grady Freestanding Emergency Department in Union City

Fulton County Chairman Robb Pitts and members of the Board of Commissioners joined Grady Health System officials, Governor Brian Kemp, First Lady Marty Kemp, and Union City Mayor Vince Williams on April 9th for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new 20,000 square-foot freestanding emergency department. The facility will be located on Highway 92 at South Fulton Parkway in Union City.

The project represents the latest collaboration in Fulton County’s long-standing partnership with Grady Health System, which spans over a century. Fulton County will contribute approximately $19.2 million in debt service payments towards the new emergency center.

The development addresses a critical need for improved healthcare access in South Fulton. Following the closure of two hospitals in Fulton County in 2022, a “Project Care” study confirmed a significant “healthcare desert” in the southern part of the county, revealing a seven-year life expectancy gap compared to North Fulton residents. This study prompted Fulton County to engage with Grady leadership to address the disparity.

Chairman Robb Pitts emphasized the urgency of the project, stating, “We learned that the lack of accessible emergency care in South Fulton is literally costing people their lives. I applaud Grady’s leadership for listening, and I applaud them even more for taking real action. Residents in South Fulton need this and they deserve it.”

The new freestanding emergency room is scheduled to open in Fall 2026. The 40-acre site also offers potential for future expansion to include additional healthcare services.
