The City of Vidalia is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mayor Pro-Tem John Raymond Turner, a dedicated public servant who served the community for over four decades. His passing leaves a significant void in the city, but his legacy of leadership, humility, and service will be long remembered.

Mayor Doug Roper expressed his profound sadness, stating, “It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Mayor Pro-Tem Raymond Turner. While he leaves a tremendous void in our community, we celebrate his over four decades of service to the City of Vidalia. When I think about servant leadership, Mr. Turner is the epitome of what embodies that terminology. Through service to our country, his family, church, and our community, Mr. Turner touched countless lives. We will be forever grateful for his long-lasting impact, and we will strive relentlessly to honor and continue his legacy.”

Mayor Roper also noted the poignant timing of Mr. Turner’s passing, marking the five-year anniversary of the death of his close friend and fellow public servant, Mayor Ronnie Dixon, who passed away on April 1, 2020. Together, their service to the City of Vidalia spanned over eighty years.

Mayor Pro-Tem Turner will be remembered for his leadership, public service, quiet strength, steady presence, and deep love for the Vidalia community. His contributions have created a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. Turner was originally from Metter, GA.

The City of Vidalia extends its deepest condolences to Mrs. Turner, their son Keith, and all of their family and friends during this difficult time.
