Deputy Shoots Suspect After Firearm Incident in Augusta

At approximately 1:06 PM on Thursday, March 13th, Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the 3500 block of Primrose Drive in Augusta. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the female complainant, who reported that a male suspect known to her had stolen her firearm and left the residence just before deputies arrived.

A short time later, a responding deputy located the suspect based on the description provided. The suspect was walking near 2941 Glenn Hills Drive, in front of Glenn Hills Middle School. As the deputy attempted to make contact, the suspect produced a firearm from his waistband, prompting the deputy to discharge his weapon, striking the suspect.

The deputy’s body-worn camera was activated during the incident and has been turned over to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigation Team for review. The District Attorney’s Office has also been notified.

The suspect was transported to Doctors Hospital in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.
