David James Roper was found guilty of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime by a Haralson County jury on February 27, 2025.

The three-day trial, presided over by Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit Chief Superior Court Judge Mark Murphy, resulted from a shooting incident on June 10, 2021. The case was prosecuted by Paulding Assistant District Attorney Jason Treadaway, as it was conflicted out of the Haralson County District Attorney’s Office.

The incident occurred on Westbrook Road in Bremen, where deputies found Deon McFarling with multiple gunshot wounds. McFarling identified Roper as the shooter. A standoff ensued at Roper’s residence, ending with his surrender after several hours with the assistance of GSP SWAT.

“I would like to thank the Paulding County District Attorney’s Office and especially Assistant District Attorney Treadaway for his hard work and dedication in getting this conviction, and for achieving justice for the victim,” stated Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jaeson Smith.

Sheriff Stacy Williams also expressed gratitude to the various agencies involved, including the Paulding County ADA Treadaway, Captain Donnie Mapp, Lt. Heather Mecillas, Master Sgt. Kent Johnson, and Investigator Robin Hood, for their efforts.

“I would first like to thank everyone that was involved the night of June 10, 2021, when this happened. There were a lot of departments that worked together to end this incident safely,” stated Sheriff Stacy Williams. “I am glad that we were able to get justice for the victim.”

The Haralson County Sheriff’s Office also thanked the Moore family, Haralson County E-911 Dispatch, Haralson County Fire Department, Ambucare, Northwest Georgia Drug Task Force, the Georgia State Patrol SWAT, and the Hazmat team from the City of Carrollton.

David Roper will be sentenced in April.
