Body of Missing Driver Recovered Following Extensive Search After Rockdale County Hit-and-Run

On January 25, 2025, at approximately 6:43 PM, Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported hit-and-run involving a single vehicle near Turner Road and Sherrie Lane, close to the Rockdale and DeKalb County line.

When deputies arrived at 6:49 PM, the driver, identified as Shaquel Liburd, had fled the scene. Liburd’s mother later arrived and informed deputies that her son suffered from a traumatic brain injury resulting from a prior accident. She stated she was on the phone with him at the time, urging him to return, but he did not comply.

In response, deputies issued a Mattie’s Call at approximately 9:37 PM and initiated a large-scale search and rescue operation with assistance from multiple agencies, including Rockdale County Fire Rescue, Conyers Police Department, Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Georgia State Patrol.

The search spanned areas between Turner Road and Iris Drive and nearby residential and commercial zones in Stonecrest. Search teams employed K-9 units, drones, helicopters with Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) technology, and foot canvasses. Investigators also tracked the last known location of Liburd’s phone.

Despite exhaustive efforts, the search concluded at 11:43 PM without locating Liburd.

On January 26, 2025, the body of Mr. Liburd was recovered in DeKalb County. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
