A deadly officer-involved shooting in Atlanta is under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) following an armed robbery incident on Monday, January 6, 2025.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., a Fulton County Sheriff’s Office deputy was flagged down by a Krispy Kreme employee reporting an armed robbery at the doughnut shop. The employee indicated the suspect was still nearby. The deputy located the suspect behind the Easy Rental store in the 600 block of Lee Street.

As the deputy approached, the suspect began shooting at both the deputy and the Krispy Kreme employee. The deputy took cover behind a car and returned fire, wounding the suspect. During the exchange, the deputy sustained a gunshot wound to his hand.

Both the suspect and the deputy were transported to a hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The deputy was identified as Lt. Gerald Johnson.

Investigators determined that, in addition to the Krispy Kreme robbery, the suspect had also shot two employees at the Easy Rental while attempting to rob the business.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation, and the case file will be submitted to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
