Clayton County Jury Convicts Man of Murdering His Father During Argument
Clayton County District Attorney Tasha M. Mosley announced the conviction of 35-year-old Russell Lavontae Rainey, who was found guilty of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. The verdict was rendered by a Clayton County jury after a trial that began on November 18, 2024, and concluded on November 22, 2024.
The case stemmed from an incident on April 27, 2023, when Rainey shot and killed his father, Charles Rainey, during a heated argument. The prosecution presented evidence showing that the dispute between father and son escalated to violence, resulting in the tragic death.
Assistant District Attorney Brianna Jordan led the prosecution, with Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Nigel Hunter as co-counsel. Major Case Investigator Khalil Rahjun and Victim Advocate Maria Dillard played key roles in the investigation and prosecution of the case.
Senior Judge Arch McGarity, who presided over the trial, sentenced Russell Rainey to life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years.
District Attorney Mosley emphasized the severity of family violence, stating, “This case is a somber reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise when conflicts escalate and firearms are involved.”
