Officer-Involved Shooting in Athens-Clarke County Leaves Suspect Dead

On August 11th, at approximately 1:20 AM, Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a report of an armed man near the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road. Upon arrival, officers encountered a suspect armed with a firearm.

According to the preliminary investigation, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and the officers. At least two officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.

Following standard protocol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will lead the investigation into the shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. All further inquiries should be directed to the GBI.

UPDATE: The deceased suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Marquavious Sims.
