Man Fatally Shot in Newton County; Suspect Arrested and Charged

At approximately 12:46 p.m. on Monday, August 5th, a shooting was reported at the Almon Road/Crowell Road exit near the vape shop. The suspect fled the scene but has been located and taken into custody by Newton County deputies.

The victim, Treyviyon Mason, 27, of Covington, was transported to a local hospital and later succumbed to his injuries. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident. Newton County Fire Services also assisted at the scene.

The suspect, Elan Shabazz, 32, of Conyers, has been arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, drive-by shooting, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Sheriff Ezell Brown has extended his condolences to the victim’s family.
