Georgia State Senator Expresses Concern Over Proposed School Closures in Augusta

Democratic Caucus Whip Sen. Harold Jones II (D–Augusta) voiced his dismay upon learning about a recommended list of school closures in Augusta, Georgia, on March 25, 2024. Among the listed schools is Sen. Jones’s alma mater, Glenn Hills High School.

In response to the recent development, Sen. Jones stated, “Both the community and Augusta-Richmond County School Board face difficult choices about school closings. While I hope that no more Richmond County schools will be forced to close, as an alumnus of Glenn Hills, I must highlight the contributions that Glenn Hills graduates have made to our community.”

He continued, emphasizing the notable achievements of Glenn Hills alumni, including Judge David Watkins, the first African American State Court Judge for Augusta, Georgia, Judge Kelli McIntyre, the first African American female Solicitor and first African American female State Court Judge, the late Edward Tarver, the first African American United States Attorney for the Southern District, as well as current State Rep. Brian Prince (D–Augusta).

“Glenn Hills and all schools on the recommended closure list have been instrumental to the growth and development of our county. It is my sincere desire that we can explore other options and preserve these schools, as each one contributes a unique and rich history to our city,” Sen. Jones concluded.
