9-Year-Old Boy Dies Days After Being Struck by Pickup Truck in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. – A 9-year-old boy has died from injuries sustained after he was struck by a pickup truck while entering Lexington Road in Athens, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:07 p.m. on Aug. 8 at the intersection of Lexington Road and Whit Davis Road.

Police said a 2018 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound on Lexington Road when a pedestrian entered the roadway heading south from the Hardee’s parking lot.

The pickup struck the pedestrian, identified as 9-year-old Maxton Ball of Ellenwood, Georgia.

Ball suffered severe injuries and was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment.

Athens-Clarke County Police investigators later learned that Ball succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 11, three days after the collision.

Authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the crash or indicated that any charges have been filed against the driver.

Police said the incident marks the seventh fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2026.

The investigation remains ongoing.
