Traffic Stop for Speeding Leads to Marijuana Arrest in Twiggs County

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ga. – A traffic stop targeting speeding drivers in Twiggs County led to an arrest Thursday morning after a sheriff’s deputy discovered 100 grams of suspected marijuana inside a vehicle.

According to the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office, a patrol deputy was conducting high-visibility traffic enforcement at approximately 7:43 a.m. on Aug. 13 along Highway 129 near New Bullard Road.

The deputy spotted a black four-door Kia K4 traveling at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.

Using radar, the deputy clocked the vehicle traveling 74 mph in a posted 55 mph zone, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Oscar Freeman.

Deputy Reports Smelling Marijuana During Stop

While conducting the traffic stop, the deputy reported detecting a strong odor of raw marijuana coming from inside the Kia.

Authorities said the odor provided probable cause for a search of the vehicle.

During the search, the deputy discovered a large clear bag containing approximately 100 grams of suspected marijuana.

Freeman was arrested without incident and transported to the Twiggs County Law Enforcement Center.

The sheriff’s office did not specify the formal charges filed against Freeman in its account of the arrest.

In its characteristic lighthearted description of the arrest, the agency said Freeman was provided its “world-famous bologna sandwich” and a “complimentary new orange outfit” after arriving at the jail.

“Slow down. Don’t ride dirty,” the sheriff’s office wrote while reminding motorists that its high-visibility enforcement efforts are intended to reduce dangerous driving and improve safety on county roads.
