Three Arrested After Burglary Investigation Leads to Hours-Long SWAT Standoff in Clayton County

CONLEY, Ga. – Three suspects were arrested Tuesday after a burglary investigation in Clayton County escalated into a hours-long standoff that ended with a suspect being taken into custody from an attic, according to the Clayton County Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 9:17 a.m. on July 28 to a reported burglary in progress at a residence in the 1500 block of Rock Cut Road.

When officers arrived, they encountered the first suspect, identified as Alonzo Williams, outside the home.

As officers searched the residence, they found a second suspect, Rochelle Smith, inside. During the investigation, officers learned a third suspect remained inside the house and had barricaded himself.

Because of the barricaded suspect, the Clayton County Police Department activated its SWAT Unit, Bomb Unit, Drone Unit and Negotiations Unit to assist with the incident.

At approximately 3 p.m., SWAT officers located the third suspect in the attic of the residence. The suspect, identified as Joshua Bryant, surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

Police charged Williams with burglary.

Smith was also charged with burglary.

Bryant was charged with burglary and obstruction.

Authorities said Rock Cut Road has since reopened to normal traffic following the conclusion of the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
