Suspect Fatally Shot After Opening Fire on Coweta County Deputies During Traffic Stop
COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — A man was fatally shot Monday afternoon after authorities say he fired multiple rounds at Coweta County Sheriff’s deputies during a traffic stop on Interstate 85.
According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 1:22 p.m. on June 29 on Interstate 85 South near mile marker 34.
Deputies had stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and asked the driver to step out while they conducted a roadside interview.
Investigators said the driver suddenly ran back to his vehicle and got into the driver’s seat.
Deputies attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle and deployed a Taser, but authorities said it had no effect.
During the struggle, the suspect allegedly retrieved a firearm from inside the vehicle and fired multiple shots at the deputies.
Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead.
No Coweta County Sheriff’s deputies were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in such cases.
The GBI will release additional information as the investigation progresses.
