Deputy-Involved Shooting Under Investigation After Fatal Encounter in Bibb County

MACON, Ga. — A deputy-involved shooting that left a 35-year-old man dead is under investigation after deputies responded to a reported assault at a residence on Bloomfield Road Saturday night, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said a call was received by the Macon-Bibb E-911 Center at 8:43 p.m. reporting that a person had been cut at a residence in the 5800 block of Bloomfield Road.

Patrol deputies responding to the scene found a 51-year-old man being attacked by a 35-year-old man armed with scissors, according to investigators. The suspect then charged at a deputy while still holding the weapon.

The deputy discharged a firearm, striking the suspect.

Paramedics responded and provided medical aid before the suspect was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Medical staff later pronounced him dead. The man was identified as Joshua Epps. Authorities said his next of kin has been notified.

The 51-year-old victim was treated at the scene for injuries described as non-life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division will also conduct an internal review of the incident.
