Driver, Passenger Die After Vehicle Overturns on Gordon Highway in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Georgia – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of two people early Thursday morning on Gordon Highway.

Deputies responded to the scene at approximately 5:23 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious crash on Gordon Highway just west of Barton Chapel Road.

According to preliminary findings, the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Gordon Highway near Milledgeville Road when it struck the median.

Investigators said the vehicle then crossed the westbound lanes of traffic, left the roadway, and overturned in a wooded area on the north side of the highway.

A female passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained inside the vehicle and was also pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities have not released the identities of either victim pending notification of their families.

Due to the ongoing investigation, westbound lanes of Gordon Highway at Barton Chapel Road were closed for an extended period Thursday morning. Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes and expect traffic delays in the area.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
